BOTH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCES MUST BE USED ACCORDING TO PAGE 3 UNDER BIBLIOGRAPHY SECTION.
Aim for a range of sources (books, articles, newspaper reports, government documents, documentaries, memoirs), and for a mix of primary and secondary materials. In your bibliography list primary and secondary source separately. You are expected to have a minimum of 12 sources (primary plus secondary) in your bibliography.
All in all, please be sure to properly cite in footnotes of any primary/secondary sources you use (including the primary source itself) and you must include a bibliography – reference list has to be attached in the final page.
Structure of the Research Essay (include sub-headings)
– Introduction: Argument (come up with your own argument), Topic (formulate your own topic), Outline (what will you be talking about?)
– Body: You must present 3 key points minimally of reasons you think the ‘Final Solution’ emerge through ‘improvisation’ or ‘deliberate planning.’ (one point for each paragraph and remember the topic sentence must be clear)
– Conclusion: Summary (summarise your content), Larger Context and Open Questions
What I meant by larger context and open questions is that you situate the essay topic in a larger context – this can be for instance the larger field of genocide studies (‘what does the case discussed in the essay tell us about genocide more in general?’) and / or historiography (this can be e.g. the study of Germany, Turkey, Cambodia, Rwanda etc more in general – which part within the history of these countries does genocide play?) and / or other cases of genocide.
Regarding open questions: these usually come up while you’re doing your research and concern open ends, things that are interesting, that you would like to know more about, that have not been addressed in the sources and the secondary literature (one example would be: the role of women in genocide both as victims and as perpetrators). These are things that you find surprising, interesting, worth pursuing further.

Have a look at Week 6 (START FROM P.98) and 7 (START FROM P.131) reading materials. The readings provided can be used to incorporate into the research essay. You must also use other sources outside of the reading list (bare in mind they must be of the same nature – books, journal articles and so on) if you wish as long as they are relevant and reliable sources.
