Effects of Alloying Elements on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of B-Ti alloys
Meta-stable ��-Titanium alloys with excellent strength-weight ratio are attractive for commercial aerospace applications due to their higher mechanical strength
compared with traditional Titanium alloys. The project will develop a systematic understanding of the impact of alloying additions on the mechanical performance of a
Ti-5553 ��-Titanium alloy by using the Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) additive manufacturing system. The objectives of the proposed research programme are to: (1)
Develop a coupled LENS additive manufacturing system with in situ characterisation methodology to accelerate alloy development and validation; (2) Quantify the effects
of alloying additions on microstructural evolution by using large-scale experimental facilities; (3) Correlate the mechanical properties that include fatigue with the
engineered microstructures in modified Ti-5553 alloy. Novel chemically graded structures will also be investigated, and advanced analytical techniques such as
neutron/synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments will be used to characterise the materials produced.
