1. Paper 1 – Camillo Sitte: City Planning According to Artistic Principles (1889)
Question/s: Read Sitte’s paper and address the following 2 questions. (I) What were the issues, concerns and problems with city planning as viewed by Sitte at the time of writing his paper? (1889) (ii) What principles and objectives underlined Sitte’s approach to city planning according to artistic principles? (Note – use other refs and importantly, images to support your answer if you wish).
2. Paper 2 – The Planning and Design of Port Sunlight
Question/s: Read the article by Robert Stout (Chapter IX) and also consider the information in the video on Port Sunlight as shown in class. Based on the above, answer the following: (i) What were the drivers for the establishment of Port Sunlight by the Lever Brothers? (ii) What are some of the key planning and design features incorporated into the ‘model village’ of Port Sunlight between 1888-1914? (Note – use images to support your answer).
3. Paper 3 – The Principles of Garden City Planning
Questions: Read the article on “The Principles of Garden City Planning” by Andrew Ward (Chapter 2). Based on the above, answer the following: (I) summarise the features of Garden City Planning in Australia before Canberra (p.10-20), and (ii) summarise the special “Garden City” planning principles applied in Canberra (p.22-29).
4. Paper 4 – John Sulman, 1890. The Laying Out of Towns
Questions: (i) Briefly describe the five elements Sulman considered necessary to be included in the laying out of Australian towns. (ii) Focus on the section called Decoration (end page 3, page 4 and top page 5). Using that section, outline the five (5) elements that Sulman considered essential to achieving ‘beauty’, including why Sulman thought they were important.
