SHORT STORY ESSAY: DUE 5/2
Stories: “Sonny’s Blues”, “Laughing Man”, “For Esme….” , “Teddy” and “A Perfect Day for Banana Fish”
Choose one of the short stories we have read this semester and write a 3-5 page essay answering one of the following prompts:

1.    How does the author promote creativity as a means to combat suffering? In this essay, your focus should be to examine the creative act of a character as a means to reveal, and cope with, suffering. What is the end result of this cathartic act?

2.    What motif(s) are present in the short story  that help establish the struggle of characters with their given environment? For this essay, you will want to create a thesis that analyzes the thematic relevance of a motif and its relationship to a character’s personal struggle.
