and all sources of information you use, and this must include at least one peer-reviewed article from a
scientific journal. If you are not sure how or when to cite a source, please see me well in advance of the
due date.
Your task:
1. Pick a disease, caused by a microbe, which you find interesting.
2. E-mail me the name of the disease and the microbe you would like to use prior to April 24th
,
2015 from your KBCC email address. I will approve or suggest an alternative, if necessary.
3. Research the disease thoroughly using resources including but not limited to PubMed, your
textbook, Medscape, The Mayo Clinic, CDC, WHO, etc. Wikipedia is not a reliable or acceptable
source.
4. You will compose a fictional case study based on your disease affecting an imaginary patient.
This case study MUST contain the following sections:
a. Background: Introduce the patient and provide an account of their symptoms, signs,
lifestyle factors, comorbidities, recent travel, and anything else you decide is relevant to
their diagnosis.
b. Physical and Laboratory Findings: Include whatever test results apply to the disease you
have chosen. For example, does the patient have a fever? Elevated blood pressure? Is
the patient anemic? Dehydrated? If the agent is bacterial, what are the Gram stain
results? Arrangement? Metabolic testing? Blood Count? Where was the patient cultured
from? If it is viral, what type of virus is detected? You must include tests relevant to the
disease you have chosen (what would a nurse or doctor do to evaluate the patient), and
the results should correspond to the disease signs and symptoms.
c. Diagnosis: Name the microorganism causing the disease and discuss how the patient
exam/background and testing results point to this diagnosis. Describe the
microorganism and the disease it causes, as well as how common this disease is in the
region of the world your patient is from. How common is this illness in the United
States? What is its importance to public health?
: Writing Assignment
d. Treatment: What is the treatment for this disease? Antimicrobials, surgery, etc.? If
there is a drug treatment, what will you prescribe and for how long? What is the
mechanism by which your treatment works? Should the patient undergo any changes in
lifestyle? Are any public health measures recommended to prevent the further spread
of this disease (vaccines, quarantine, monitoring, cleaning)?
e. Outcome: What happened to the patient? Did they survive? Did they suffer any long
term consequences? Do they require ongoing medical intervention as a result of this
disease?
f. References: At least one article from a peer-reviewed scientific journal must be
included. You must have at least 4 references total.
5. Grading Criteria:
a. Is the information about your microbe and disease correct?
b. Do your test results and patient history support your diagnosis?
c. Is your outcome realistic?
d. References: I will spot check references. Your resources must be appropriately cited
