Research Review

Objective:

Gain experiencing examining peer-reviewed journal articles on family communication research, theory or findings and summarize main ideas.

Instructions:

1 – Find a peer-reviewed journal article on a family communication issue or related area. Some common topics could include divorce, marital conflict, domestic violence, premarital counseling, parenting, juvenile delinquency, etc. Use library databases like PsychInfo, JSTOR or Web of Knowledge to find journal articles. You may also want to use Google Scholar.

  1. Dixie State Databases by Subject: Google Scholar

2 – Write a 2 to 3 page paper with the following areas addressed:

  1. Summary of the purpose of the article
  2. Major Findings
  3. How these finding impact how we understand that particular concept or how the findings could be applied to a family or professional.

3 – Include the reference of the journal article cited in APA format. If you need help on APA, I like using this site:

Grading:

APA:                                                      10 points

Grammar/Sentence Structure:  15 points

Appropriate Reference:                                15 points

Critical Thinking:                               25 points

Key Principles of Success:

1 – The worst thing to do is to choose a non-peer reviewed article source like a news article or article from a website or blog. The best thing to do is to choose a peer-reviewed article. I typically choose articles from Family Process, Journal of Marriage & Family Therapy, Family Relations, Communication Research, Journal of Communication, etc.

2- Critical thinking means considering ways that you could apply what you have read in a family or professional setting. I don’t want a summary of the article in all sections, I want to see if you can apply research findings to real life.
