Pompeii and Detroit
***This is a Powerpoint. Its 12-15 slides but very short with 2-3 sentences on each slide. 80-100 words total. Thank you so much!!!*** Your first visual essay, which you will produce as PowerPoint presentation, will compare the cities of Pompeii and Detroit. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED, NO EXCEPTIONS. Review the “How to Write a Visual Essay” web site for basic information on what goes into a visual essay, though please understand that you are preparing a Powerpoint presentation rather than a video.
Based on the “Learning from Pompeii” article by C.W. Westfall and the “Viewing Pompeii” visual resource website (links given below), you are to compare the urban layouts of the downtown sector of the American city of Detroit and the Roman city of Pompeii. In this comparison, I would like you to consider: (1) the general categories of buildings and spaces found in each city, (2) the relationships among the different categories of buildings and spaces in both cities, (3) how these components differ or are alike in the two cities, and (4) what you are able to discern about how Romans vs. Detroiters thought about public versus private spaces in the urban context based on the arrangements of buildings and spaces. Use the insights and the “rules of design” outlined in the Westfall article to help guide and organize your ideas.
On the basis of your comparative analysis, you will create a 12-15 slide PowerPoint show that contains both written text and images. Your first slide will contain the title of your essay and your name; the last slide will contain a bibliography of the works used in your visual essay. In this visual essay, you will develop at least four key points and illustrate these with maps and images. In general, I expect each slide to contain 2-3 sentences, e.g., 80-100 words, that describe what you are illustrating in the slide and that lead the reader through your essay. Please be sure to provide captions for all of the images you use that include the source from which they were obtained.
