Copy the lede, word for word, tell us where it was published (what newspaper, website, etc.) and when. Also say whether you think it is a good lede or a bad one; and, in a sentence or two, explain why.
I will compile the ledes, and we’ll talk about them in the next class session. Be prepared to speak in class, telling us why you think it’s a good lede or a bad one.
Following is my list of what a good lede should do for readers. Use these criteria to evaluate ledes. Also apply other things you have learned about what makes a good lede.
- Suck ’em in.
- Give ’em a clue.
- Start with strong words.
- Don’t waste words.
For more explanation of these goals, watch this 13-minute video: What a lede must accomplish (Links to an external site.)
