How to summarize an article without plagiarizing

How to summarize an article without plagiarizing

Plagiarism is copying another person’s ideas or thoughts. When summarizing an article it is essential to be extra careful not to plagiarize. Professors are conversant with a broad range of information and they can easily detect plagiarism. Also, with the advancement of technology various programs have been invented that aid in plagiarism detection. The consequences of plagiarism differ depending on the institution. Some colleges go to the extent of even canceling a student’s work. It is therefore important to be cautious whenever you are summarizing an article, assigned by your instructor. Here are some tips that you can use.

Use quotations.

If you can’t refrain from writing information directly from the article. Then quote it, use quotation marks. Remember to mention the name of the author. Avoid quoting too many statements from the article you read as this may make your work less unique. Do not change the words in the quotations, write them as the writer puts them.

Rewrite

Another way to avoid plagiarism is to rewrite the content in your own words. Read the article several times to understand the gist and the main ideas. Take some time reading the introduction to grasp the thesis statement. As you read the article, make notes. Making notes helps you remember the points and makes it easy to paraphrase them. You can merge the ideas in the article with yours to make your work more unique. When paraphrasing a sentence don’t rearrange the words instead rewrite in your own words.

Include references

Use references to show the materials you sourced your work from. There are different formats used in citations. For example APA, MLA, Harvard, and Chicago. When citing include the name of the book, page number, year of publication, publication house and format it according to the format the instructor requires. In case it is a website include the name and details about the website. Do the same thing for journals and other sources. Remember the article is the main reference. However, don’t forget to mention the resources used in the article that you used and format them accordingly.

Check plagiarism before submitting your work

Before submitting your work, check whether there is any plagiarized work. Nowadays there are plenty of plagiarism checkers that can help you detect it. Ten percent is the allowable plagiarism level in college plagiarism checker. However, if the content is in a block or one sentence with more than four words, this is plagiarism, and it is not allowed. Shape up your work to ensure the level is below the acceptable. Eradicating it is the best option.
