Setting Up Your Portfolio

A portfolio is a grouping of financial assets such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. In general, a portfolio is made up of diverse investments to ensure proper allocation between risk and return. For our project, we will be focusing on stocks and tracking their performance within an Excel workbook we will be building and formatting.

For this assignment, you will build a portfolio of 10 stocks using information from the Web.

To start:

  • Conduct research to determine which 10 stocks you will be analyzing in your portfolio and how many shares you will purchase. The amount invested can be anything over $1,000, and since this is all imaginary, the amount invested can be set very high.
  • Determine which data sources you will use in your portfolio workbook.
  • Think about the format your workbook will use for upcoming analysis.

An example portfolio of two stocks is shown below.

Bankrate
Google Finance
MSN Money
AOL Finance
Marketwatch
Bloomberg
Nasdaq

Follow the example above, and create a worksheet that lists your ten stocks with the following criteria:

  1. Your column headings should include a minimum of the following information.
    • Stock Name
    • Ticker Symbol
    • Purchase Date
    • # of Shares Purchased
    • Purchase Price
    • Total Paid
  2. Add the following column headings. These columns will be used in later assignments.
    • Current Stock Price
    • Current Stock Value
    • Money Made/Lost
  3. Add a title row to your worksheet and center it at the top of the table.
  4. Use Times New Roman Font, bold, with 12 pt. font for column titles.
  5. Use 11 pt. font for all other data.
  6. Add data to the name, ticker symbol, date of purchase (today’s date), number of stocks purchased, purchase price, and total price paid for each stock (use a formula when appropriate).

    As you can see from the example, the headers are easily legible. Follow the steps below.

  7. Wrap the headers so that the columns do not become too wide.
  8. Resize the columns so that the width of columns fit the contents.
  9. Format the cell types to match their contents (e.g. date, text, currency).
  10. Rename this worksheet to “Summary”.
  11. Use the proofing tools to check for spelling and grammar errors.

In a separate worksheet (within the same workbook), list the data sources (websites) you have selected.

  • Create a list of web data sources that you either plan to use or are considering for use for this project.
  • Be sure to include the website title, the ticker symbol, and URL for each source, and include at least five or more different sources.
  • Rename this worksheet to Web Sources

Note that the URL contains the ticker symbol and is not just the home page from which you found the number.

Submit your completed assignment by following the directions below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.

Save your assignment as a Microsoft Excel workbook. (Mac users, please remember to append the “.xlsx” extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:
